About the Compound Interest Calculator
Compound interest is calculated on the principal and on the interest already earned, so the balance grows faster each period. Choose how often interest compounds — yearly, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly — and see the maturity value and the interest earned.
Try the same rate with different compounding frequencies: more frequent compounding gives a slightly higher result.
Compound interest formula
A = P × (1 + r ÷ (100 × m))^(m × t)
P is the principal, r the annual rate in percent, m the number of times interest compounds per year and t the number of years. Interest earned is A − P.
Things to keep in mind
- Time has the biggest effect: the same rate over twice the years more than doubles the interest.
- Compare products on the effective annual return, not only the quoted rate.
- Use the Rule of 72 to estimate how long it takes your money to double.
