How many micrograms are in a milligram?

One milligram is exactly 1,000 micrograms. The prefix milli means one thousandth and micro means one millionth, so a milligram is a thousand times larger than a microgram. This is an exact metric relationship, with no rounding involved.

Micrograms are written as mcg or µg. Both appear on packaging, and the converter on this site treats them as the same unit.

The mg to mcg formula

Milligrams to micrograms =mcg = mg × 1000
mcg:
mass in micrograms
mg:
mass in milligrams
1000:
micrograms in one milligram (exact)
To go back, divide: mg = mcg ÷ 1000.
  • Magnesium per tablet

    500 mg

  • Multiply

    500 × 1000

Mass in mcg

500,000 mcg

Moving the decimal three places to the right adds three zeros to 500.

For decimals the same rule applies. 0.05 mg times 1,000 is 50 mcg, and 0.0025 mg is 2.5 mcg.

  1. Write the amount in milligrams.
  2. Multiply by 1000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right.
  3. Label the answer in mcg.
  4. Check that the number grew: a smaller unit always needs a larger number.

These are the round values most often needed.

When you need to convert mg to mcg

The typical case is a product that mixes both units. A supplement may list zinc in mg but selenium in mcg, and a water-quality report may give a mineral at 0.02 mg per litre while a standard is quoted in mcg. To compare, put both in one unit.

A second worked example: a report shows lead at 0.015 mg per litre and a target of 10 mcg per litre. Convert the report: 0.015 × 1000 = 15 mcg per litre. Seeing 15 beside 10 makes the comparison clear in a way that 0.015 beside 10 does not.

A reliable sanity check is to picture the answer before you calculate. A milligram is already tiny, already a very small amount, so any number of milligrams will give a very large count of micrograms. If your answer is smaller than the starting number, you divided by mistake.

The same skill helps with unit prices and concentrations. A solution at 5 mg per millilitre contains 5,000 mcg per millilitre, and a 2 mL sample therefore holds 10,000 mcg. Converting once at the start keeps the rest of the working in whole numbers.

If you work with a spreadsheet, put the conversion factor in its own cell and refer to it, rather than typing 1000 into every formula. That way a single typo cannot spread through a whole column of supplement or sample amounts, and anyone reading the sheet can see where the number came from.

Common mistakes when converting mg to mcg

  • Dividing instead of multiplying. Milligrams are the bigger unit, so the microgram figure must be larger.
  • Shifting the decimal the wrong number of places. It is three places for mg to mcg, not two.
  • Treating mcg and mg as interchangeable on a label. A 1,000-fold difference matters, so read the unit every time.
  • Forgetting that results here are only unit conversions. They are not dosing advice, so ask a pharmacist or doctor about any dose.

Common questions

How many mcg are in 1 mg?

There are 1,000 mcg in 1 mg. This is an exact relationship because milli is a thousandth and micro is a millionth. To convert, multiply the milligrams by 1,000, so 2 mg is 2,000 mcg.

How do I convert mg to mcg?

Multiply the milligrams by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right. For example, 0.25 mg × 1000 = 250 mcg. The answer will always be larger than the number you started with.

How many mcg is 5 mg?

5 mg is 5,000 mcg. Multiply 5 by 1,000 to get the answer. You can also check by dividing back: 5,000 mcg ÷ 1,000 returns 5 mg, which confirms that you moved the decimal in the right direction.

Is mcg bigger than mg?

No. A microgram is 1,000 times smaller than a milligram. That is why the same amount has a larger number in mcg than in mg. 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg, and 1 mcg equals only 0.001 mg.

How do I convert mcg to mg?

Divide the micrograms by 1,000, or move the decimal point three places left. For instance, 750 mcg is 0.75 mg. Use the reverse converter on this page when you want the answer without any arithmetic.
