How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds, rounded to five decimal places. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so a kilogram is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046226... pounds.
Two checks help you trust a conversion. First, the answer in pounds should always be a little more than double the kilograms. Second, dividing your answer by 2.20462 should bring you back to the kilograms you started with.
The abbreviation lb comes from the Latin libra, and lbs is its plural. Both mean the same thing, and a calculator will accept either.
This article takes a kilogram figure, such as a luggage limit or a gym plate, and turns it into pounds. If you are starting from pounds on an American label or a baby's birth weight, the lbs to kg article is the better fit.
Kg to lbs formula and a head-math shortcut
- kilograms:
- Mass in kilograms
- 2.20462:
- Pounds in one kilogram, rounded
- Write down the weight in kilograms.
- Multiply by 2.20462.
- Round to one or two decimals, depending on the use.
- If a limit is involved, round up the weight you are comparing, not the limit.
For a quick estimate, double the kilograms and add 10% of that doubled number. For 70 kg, that is 140 + 14 = 154 lb, against the exact 154.32 lb. The error is about 0.2%.
- 0.5 kg = 1.10 lb
- 2 kg = 4.41 lb
- 5 kg = 11.02 lb
- 15 kg = 33.07 lb
- 50 kg = 110.23 lb
You can also build a weight from the list above. For 35 kg, add 25 kg (55.12 lb) and 10 kg (22.05 lb) to get 77.17 lb, which agrees with the exact 35 × 2.20462 = 77.16 lb once rounding is allowed for.
Decide how many decimals you need before you convert. One decimal is enough for body weight and baggage, two decimals suit lifts and recipes, and whole pounds will do for a rough estimate.
The simpler multiply-by-2.2 route is also fine for small weights, but it drifts as the numbers grow: 100 kg gives 220 lb instead of 220.46 lb.
Worked example: is a 23 kg bag under a 50 lb limit?
Assume your airline's weight limit is 50 lb per bag, and your scale at home reads 23 kg.
Bag weight
23 kg
Factor
2.20462 lb per kg
Assumed limit
50 lb
Bag weight in pounds
50.71 lb
23 × 2.20462 = 50.706 lb, so the bag is 0.71 lb (about 320 g) over a 50 lb limit.
That is a small gap, but a strict agent can still charge for it. Moving a pair of shoes or a toiletry bag into your cabin bag, which can easily weigh half a kilogram, is enough to fix it.
Many travellers also carry two bags. Suppose they weigh 18.5 kg and 21.2 kg. In pounds that is 40.79 lb and 46.74 lb, a combined 87.52 lb. Whether the airline checks each piece or the total, convert each bag separately so you can see which one is the heavy one.
Baggage weights in kilograms and pounds
| Kilograms | Pounds | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 7 kg | 15.43 lb | Example cabin-bag limit |
| 10 kg | 22.05 lb | Generous cabin-bag limit (example) |
| 15 kg | 33.07 lb | Example checked-bag limit on a budget fare |
| 20 kg | 44.09 lb | Example checked-bag limit |
| 23 kg | 50.71 lb | Example checked-bag limit |
| 25 kg | 55.12 lb | A heavy bag |
| 30 kg | 66.14 lb | A very heavy bag |
| 32 kg | 70.55 lb | Example per-piece maximum |
Excess-baggage fees are often charged per kilogram, so keep the excess in kilograms too. The 0.71 lb over the limit above is 0.32 kg, and a charge may be applied to a whole kilogram, so it is usually cheaper to move that weight than to pay.
Hand-held luggage scales usually read in steps of 100 g, which is 0.22 lb per step. Cheap scales can also be off by more than one step, so treat a displayed 23.0 kg as 'about 23 kg' and keep a small margin below any limit.
Always read your own ticket for the real limit. The table is a conversion aid, not a statement of what any airline allows.
Barbell plates in kilograms and pounds
| Plate | Pounds |
|---|---|
| 1.25 kg | 2.76 lb |
| 2.5 kg | 5.51 lb |
| 5 kg | 11.02 lb |
| 10 kg | 22.05 lb |
| 15 kg | 33.07 lb |
| 20 kg | 44.09 lb |
| 25 kg | 55.12 lb |
A standard men's barbell is 20 kg, which is 44.09 lb. Load a 25 kg, a 10 kg and a 2.5 kg plate on each side and the total is 20 + 2 × 37.5 = 95 kg, or 209.44 lb.
Dumbbells and kettlebells use the same factor. A 12.5 kg dumbbell is 27.56 lb, a 16 kg kettlebell is 35.27 lb, and a 24 kg kettlebell is 52.91 lb.
Small plates are the reason lifters on a metric bar progress in odd-looking pounds. Adding a 1.25 kg plate to each side raises the total by 2.5 kg, which is 5.51 lb. That is close to the 5 lb jumps many lifters in pounds use.
American gyms mark plates in pounds, so you will see 45 lb where a metric gym has 20 kg. A 45 lb plate is really 20.41 kg, so a lift built from American plates will not land on round kilogram numbers.
Body weight, groceries and parcels
Fitness apps and foreign medical forms may ask for weight in pounds. A person weighing 70 kg is 154.32 lb, and 55 kg is 121.25 lb.
The same factor works in the kitchen and at the post office. A 5 kg bag of flour is 11.02 lb, which is useful when an American recipe lists ingredients by the pound. A 3.5 kg parcel is 7.72 lb on an international shipping form.
A change of 1 kg is 2.2 lb, so a half-kilogram swing on the scale is a little over 1 lb. Body weight naturally moves through the day, so look at weekly trends rather than single readings, and talk to a doctor before setting any weight goal.
Mistakes with kg to lbs
- Dividing by 2.2 instead of multiplying. A 23 kg bag does not weigh 10.5 lb.
- Using 2 as the factor. It understates every weight by about 9%, which is why 70 kg is not 140 lb.
- Rounding a bag weight down at the check-in desk. Round up so you stay safely under the limit.
- Rounding the factor to 2.2 on a heavy load. For 1,000 kg that gives 2,200 lb, which is 4.6 lb below the true 2,204.6 lb.
- Converting a combined weight but comparing it with a per-bag limit. Read how the limit is applied before you decide whether you are over.
A conversion is only as good as the number you put in, so weigh the bag fully packed, with the lock, tags and anything you will be carrying out of the house.
Common questions
How many pounds is 1 kg?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds. For quick calculations 2.2 is close enough, with an error of under 0.3%. For an exact figure, multiply kilograms by 2.20462 and round at the end.
How many lbs is 70 kg?
70 kg is 154.32 lb, found by multiplying 70 by 2.20462. The head-math version, doubling and adding 10%, gives 154 lb, which is accurate enough for most records. Round to 154.3 lb if a form wants one decimal.
Is lb the same as lbs?
Yes. The abbreviation lb stands for pound, taken from the Latin word libra, and lbs is the plural form. Either one means the same unit of 0.45359237 kg, so 150 lb and 150 lbs describe the same weight.
How can I convert kg to lbs in my head?
Double the kilograms and add one tenth of the doubled amount. For 55 kg, double is 110, a tenth is 11, so the answer is about 121 lb. The exact figure is 121.25 lb.
How many lbs is a 23 kg suitcase?
A 23 kg suitcase weighs 50.71 lb, calculated as 23 × 2.20462. That is just over a 50 lb limit, so check your airline's rules and move a little weight to your cabin bag.
