How many milligrams are in a gram?

One gram is exactly 1,000 milligrams. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so a milligram is 0.001 g. That makes 500 mg equal to 0.5 g and 250 mg equal to 0.25 g, with no rounding at any step.

Milligrams are used for small quantities where grams would need many decimal places: nutrients on a food label, ingredients in a tablet, or the weight of a sample in a lab. Grams are used for the larger totals, so moving between them is a frequent task.

The mg to g formula

Milligrams to grams =g = mg ÷ 1,000
g:
mass in grams
mg:
mass in milligrams
1,000:
milligrams in one gram (exact)
To go the other way, multiply: mg = g × 1,000.
  • Supplement dose

    1,250 mg

  • Divide

    1,250 ÷ 1,000

Mass in grams

1.25 g

Moving the decimal point three places to the left gives the same answer.

  1. Write the amount in milligrams.
  2. Divide by 1,000 (move the decimal three places left).
  3. Check that the gram figure is a thousand times smaller.

Real uses: tablets, food labels and lab samples

A 500 mg tablet contains 0.5 g of active ingredient, and a pack of 20 such tablets holds 10,000 mg, which is 10 g. Food labels list salt, calcium or caffeine in milligrams, while the serving weight is in grams, so a label comparing them often needs this conversion.

In the other direction, 2.5 g of an ingredient is 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500 mg, and 0.04 g is 40 mg. Always follow the instructions on a medicine label or from a pharmacist for doses; this converter only changes the unit and is not medical advice.

More examples: lab balances and labels

A lab balance reading 12.5 mg is 0.0125 g, and 100 mg is 0.1 g. A supplement label listing 1,500 mg per serving gives 1.5 g, so a tub with 30 servings holds 45 g of the ingredient. These small quantities are easy to misread, so write the unit next to every number.

Cooking and baking use grams, but some additives and spices are described in milligrams. A pinch quoted as 250 mg is a quarter of a gram, which a kitchen scale reading to 1 g may not detect. For very small amounts, use a scale that reads to 0.01 g or finer.

Ratios help for quick checks. If something is 1 part in 1,000 by mass, then a gram of it contains 1 mg. That relationship is the same as the conversion factor, so a result that breaks it almost certainly has a misplaced decimal point.

Common mistakes when converting mg to g

  • Moving the decimal by two places instead of three, so 25 mg becomes 0.25 g instead of 0.025 g.
  • Confusing mg with mcg or µg. One mg is 1,000 micrograms, so a dose in micrograms is a thousand times smaller than the same number in mg.
  • Multiplying instead of dividing. A gram is the larger unit, so the gram figure must be smaller.
  • Mixing mg with ml. Mass and volume are not interchangeable without a density.

Common questions

How many mg are in 1 gram?

One gram is exactly 1,000 milligrams. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so each milligram is 0.001 g. That means 2 g is 2,000 mg and 0.5 g is 500 mg, with no rounding needed at all.

How do I convert mg to grams?

Divide the milligrams by 1,000. For example, 750 mg ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 g. Moving the decimal point three places to the left does the same thing. To convert back, multiply the grams by 1,000.

How many grams is 500 mg?

A mass of 500 mg is 0.5 grams. Divide 500 by 1,000 to get the result. In the same way, 250 mg is 0.25 g, 100 mg is 0.1 g and 1,000 mg is exactly 1 g.

How do I convert grams to mg?

Multiply the grams by 1,000. For instance, 3.2 g × 1,000 = 3,200 mg. Moving the decimal point three places to the right is the same step, so 0.04 g becomes 40 mg.
