How many grams are in a microgram?
One microgram is 0.000001 gram, which is one millionth of a gram. So a gram contains exactly 1,000,000 micrograms.
The symbol is µg, and on supplement labels it is often written mcg to avoid the micro sign being misread. Both mean the same thing here.
The microgram is one of the smallest mass units you will meet on a product label, and it is used for substances that work in tiny amounts, such as some vitamins and trace minerals. The gram is the everyday unit for ingredients and portions. Converting between them makes clear just how small a dose is: a 400 µg amount is only 0.0004 g, a tiny fraction of a gram. It also shows why labels use micrograms, since a decimal like 0.0004 g is awkward to read.
The microgram to gram formula
- g:
- mass in grams
- µg:
- mass in micrograms
- 1,000,000:
- micrograms in one gram (exact)
Dose on a label
400 µg
Divide
400 ÷ 1,000,000
Mass in grams
0.0004 g
The same as 0.4 mg.
A second example: 55 µg is 0.000055 g, and 250 µg is 0.00025 g. Going back, 0.0001 g becomes 0.0001 × 1,000,000 = 100 µg.
- Write the mass in micrograms.
- Divide by 1,000,000, which moves the decimal point six places left.
- If you need milligrams, divide by 1,000 instead.
- Check that the answer is a very small decimal.
Chart: micrograms to grams
| µg | g |
|---|---|
| 1 µg | 0.000001 g |
| 2 µg | 0.000002 g |
| 5 µg | 0.000005 g |
| 10 µg | 0.00001 g |
| 25 µg | 0.000025 g |
| 50 µg | 0.00005 g |
| 100 µg | 0.0001 g |
| 250 µg | 0.00025 g |
| 500 µg | 0.0005 g |
| 1000 µg | 0.001 g |
Notice that 1,000 µg is 0.001 g, which is also 1 mg. That is the link between the three units: 1 g = 1,000 mg = 1,000,000 µg.
Where micrograms and grams meet
- Vitamin and mineral labels, where vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D are listed in mcg while the tablet weighs in grams.
- Laboratory work, such as trace amounts in water or soil samples, where results come in µg per gram or per litre.
- Pharmacy compounding, where a very small dose is mixed into a larger mass.
- Air quality, where particles are measured in micrograms per cubic metre.
Quick sanity checks for micrograms to grams
Use the chain 1 g = 1,000 mg = 1,000,000 µg. A dose of 0.5 mg is 500 µg, and 2 g is 2,000,000 µg.
Multiples add up: 100 tablets with 25 µg each hold 2,500 µg, which is 0.0025 g. Such tiny masses are why small differences in decimals matter.
A single-digit microgram value should give a gram answer with five zeros after the decimal point, such as 5 µg = 0.000005 g.
Common mistakes when converting µg to g
- Mixing up µg and mg. A milligram is 1,000 times larger than a microgram so the two must never be swapped.
- Moving the decimal point only three places. That gives milligrams, not grams.
- Reading mcg as mg because the letters look alike on a small label.
- Writing too many zeros. 0.000001 has five zeros after the point, and one missed zero changes the answer tenfold.

Common questions
How many grams is 1 microgram?
One microgram is 0.000001 grams, one millionth of a gram. This also equals 0.001 milligrams. So a gram holds 1,000,000 micrograms, and 1,000 micrograms make a single milligram.
How do I convert micrograms to grams?
Divide the micrograms by 1,000,000, or move the decimal point six places to the left. For example, 250 µg is 0.00025 g. The gram value will always be a very small number compared with the microgram value.
How do I convert grams to micrograms?
Multiply the grams by 1,000,000. A 0.002 g sample is 2,000 µg, and 1.5 g is 1,500,000 µg. The microgram figure is a million times larger, so it quickly reaches big numbers.
Is mcg the same as µg?
Yes. Mcg and µg both stand for micrograms, one millionth of a gram. Labels often use mcg so the micro sign cannot be mistaken for a milligram, which is mg and a thousand times larger.
