How many carats are in a kilogram?

There are exactly 5,000 carats in one kilogram. A carat is 0.2 grams, and a kilogram is 1,000 grams, so 1,000 divided by 0.2 gives 5,000.

Bulk dealers in coloured stones, beads and rough material weigh in kilograms, while the price per piece is in carats. That is the gap this conversion fills.

The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the metric system, while the carat is a small specialist unit that has been used for gemstones for centuries. Bridging the two is mostly a matter of scale. A kilogram of cut stones would be an enormous and very valuable parcel, but a kilogram of rough or low-grade material, beads or industrial stones is quite ordinary. That is why wholesalers and customs paperwork often list weights in kilograms, while the pieces themselves are sorted and sold per carat.

The kg to carat formula

Kilograms to carats =ct = kg × 5,000
ct:
mass in carats
kg:
mass in kilograms
5,000:
carats in one kilogram (exact)
Reverse it with kg = ct × 0.0002, or ct ÷ 5,000.
  • Parcel of rough

    0.5 kg

  • Multiply

    0.5 × 5,000

Mass in carats

2,500 ct

Half a kilogram is 500 g, and 500 ÷ 0.2 is also 2,500.

Small weights give a good second example. A 12.3 g lot is 0.0123 kg, and 0.0123 × 5,000 = 61.5 ct. Check it by dividing 12.3 by 0.2, which is also 61.5.

  1. Write the weight in kilograms as a decimal.
  2. Multiply by 5,000.
  3. Round to the precision of your scale, often 0.01 ct for cut stones.
  4. Check the answer by dividing the grams by 0.2.

Where kg to carat is used

  • Rough gemstone dealers who buy a lot by the kilogram and then split it into stones.
  • Importers checking a shipment against a supplier's invoice written in carats.
  • Researchers working with synthetic or industrial diamond grit sold by weight.

Quick sanity checks for kilograms to carats

Many dealers weigh small parcels in grams and then multiply by 5. A 250 g parcel is 1,250 ct, and a 75 g parcel is 375 ct. Both agree with the kilogram factor: 0.25 kg × 5,000 = 1,250.

Remember that 1 g is 5 ct and 1 kg is 5,000 ct. The kilogram number is always a thousand times larger than the gram one.

Carat conversions are exact, so any mismatch with an invoice means a different unit, a rounded figure or a typing slip.

Common mistakes when converting kg to carats

  • Dividing by 5,000 when you should multiply. Carat numbers are much larger than kilogram numbers.
  • Using 5 instead of 5,000. The factor 5 converts grams to carats, not kilograms.
  • Confusing carat with karat, which measures gold purity and not weight.
  • Rounding a long carat figure too early. On large lots, a rounding of 0.1 ct per stone adds up.

This is a unit conversion only. Price or grade depends on quality, not weight alone.

Common questions

How many carats are in 1 kg?

One kilogram is exactly 5,000 carats. A carat is 0.2 grams, so five carats weigh 1 gram and 5,000 carats weigh 1,000 grams. This makes 2 kg equal to 10,000 carats.

How do I convert kg to carats?

Multiply the kilograms by 5,000. For example, 2.5 kg is 12,500 carats. You can double check by converting to grams first: 2,500 g divided by 0.2 g per carat also gives 12,500 carats.

How do I convert carats to kg?

Divide the carats by 5,000, or multiply by 0.0002. A 25,000 carat parcel is 5 kg. The kilogram figure should be tiny compared with the carat number, about one five-thousandth of it.

How many carats are in a gram?

There are 5 carats in one gram, because a carat is exactly 0.2 grams. So 10 grams is 50 carats, and 100 grams is 500 carats. For kilograms the factor is 1,000 times larger: 5,000 carats.
