Quick answer

If values are 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, 27, 31, the sample variance is 48.6667.

Sample variance: s² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1).

About the Sample Variance Calculator

Sample variance measures how spread out a sample of values is around its mean. It divides by n − 1 rather than n, which corrects for the fact that a sample tends to understate the spread of the whole group. Use it when your numbers are a sample, as in most surveys and experiments.

For 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, 27 and 31, the mean is 20 and the sample variance is about 48.67.

Sample variance

s² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)

Things to keep in mind

  • It needs at least two values.
  • Variance is in squared units; take the square root to get the sample standard deviation.
  • If you have the entire group rather than a sample, use population variance.
