How many metres are in a yard?

One yard is exactly 0.9144 metres, which is 91.44 centimetres. The figure is exact: the yard has been defined as 0.9144 m since the 1959 international agreement, and it equals 3 feet or 36 inches.

A yard is therefore slightly shorter than a metre, by about 8.7 percent. That is why a distance in metres always comes out as a larger number than the same distance in yards, and why the two are close enough to be confused.

The yards to metres formula

Yards to metres =m = yards × 0.9144
m:
length in metres
yards:
length in yards
0.9144:
metres in one yard (exact)
To go the other way, divide: yards = m ÷ 0.9144, or multiply metres by 1.093613298.
  • Fabric needed

    4.25 yards

  • Multiply

    4.25 × 0.9144

Length in metres

3.8862 m

Round to 3.89 m when asking a shop to cut fabric sold by the metre.

  1. Write the length in yards as a decimal.
  2. Multiply by 0.9144.
  3. Round to what the job needs: two decimals for fabric, one for pitch lengths.
  4. Check that the metre figure is a little smaller than the yard figure.

Real uses: fabric, gardens and sports pitches

Fabric shops in the UK and US often sell by the yard, while patterns and home projects may be planned in metres. American football is measured in yards: the 100 yards between the goal lines is 91.44 m, and a 10-yard first-down distance is 9.144 m.

Going the other way, a 50 m swimming pool is 50 ÷ 0.9144 = 54.68 yards, and a 100 m sprint is 109.36 yards. Landscapers also meet the unit when ordering turf or gravel quoted per square or cubic yard.

More examples: lengths in yards and metres

A 200-yard stretch of fence is 200 × 0.9144 = 182.88 m. A 2.5-yard length of curtain track is 2.286 m. And three yards is 2.7432 m.

From metres to yards, divide by 0.9144. A 20 m garden is 21.87 yards long. When a project mixes the two systems, such as a metric plan and a supplier selling by the yard, convert everything to one unit before adding anything up, and round only the final total.

One more way to keep the units straight: there are 3 feet in a yard and a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 3 × 0.3048 = 0.9144. If you remember the foot value from a conversion chart, you can rebuild the yard figure whenever you need it.

Common mistakes when converting yards to metres

  • Treating a yard as a metre. On a 100-unit distance the error is 8.56 m, nearly a tenth of the total.
  • Dividing by 0.9144 when you should multiply, which gives yards instead of metres.
  • Mixing up a yard with a foot or an inch when a size is given as 3 ft or 36 in.
  • Confusing a linear yard with a square yard or cubic yard, which are area and volume units.

Common questions

How many metres is 1 yard?

One yard is exactly 0.9144 metres, or 91.44 centimetres. The value is an exact definition, so 2 yards is 1.8288 m and 10 yards is 9.144 m. A yard is about 9 percent shorter than a metre.

How do I convert yards to metres?

Multiply the yards by 0.9144. For example, 25 yards × 0.9144 = 22.86 metres. For a quick estimate, take off roughly 9 percent from the yard figure, which gets very close to the exact answer.

How many yards is 100 metres?

A distance of 100 metres is 109.36 yards. Divide metres by 0.9144, or multiply by 1.093613298, to get yards. So a 100 m race is just over 9 yards longer than a 100-yard dash.

How many feet are in a yard?

A yard is exactly 3 feet, or 36 inches. Since one foot is 0.3048 metres, three feet gives 0.9144 metres, which matches the yard-to-metre factor. That is a useful cross-check when converting measurements.
