How many feet are in a yard?

There are exactly 3 feet in 1 yard. The yard is 36 inches and the foot is 12 inches, and since 1959 the yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 metres.

Because the relationship is a whole number, yards to feet involves no rounding. It is simply a tripling, which you can do in your head for most everyday lengths.

The yards to feet formula

Yards to feet =feet = yards × 3
feet:
length in feet
yards:
length in yards
3:
feet in one yard (exact)
To go the other way, divide: yards = feet ÷ 3.
  • Length

    12.5 yd

  • Multiply

    12.5 × 3

Length in feet

37.5 ft

Twelve yards is 36 feet and the half yard adds 1.5 feet.

Going back, a 90-foot garden fence is 90 ÷ 3 = 30 yards, and 7 feet is 2.33 yards, which is 2 yards and 1 foot.

  1. Write the length in yards as a decimal.
  2. Multiply by 3 to get feet.
  3. For feet to yards, divide by 3.
  4. Express any leftover as whole yards plus feet, for example 7 ft is 2 yd 1 ft.

Where yards to feet comes up

Fabric shops in the US and UK still sell cloth by the yard. A curtain job that needs 8 yards of fabric is 24 feet, and that matters when your tape measure is marked in feet.

Groundskeepers marking a pitch with 40-yard lines need 120 feet of string. A builder ordering 25 yards of turf edging needs 75 feet, and the same count lets you check a quote given in feet.

Golf distances are given in yards, so a 15-yard chip shot is a 45-foot shot.

Landscaping jobs show why the exact factor helps. Gravel and mulch are often sold by the cubic yard, but a path is measured in feet. A path 30 feet long is 10 yards, so a 10-yard roll of weed membrane covers it exactly in length, and you only need to check the width.

Common mistakes converting yards to feet

  • Using 12 instead of 3. Twelve is the number of inches in a foot, not the feet in a yard.
  • Dividing when you should multiply. Feet are smaller, so a yard length gives a larger number of feet.
  • Mixing yards with metres. A yard is 0.9144 m, so 100 yards is 91.44 m, not 100 m.
  • Forgetting square or cubic units. 1 square yard is 9 square feet, and 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.

Common questions

How many feet are in a yard?

There are exactly 3 feet in 1 yard. This is a fixed definition, so there is no rounding in the conversion. A yard is also 36 inches, since each foot is 12 inches.

How do I convert yards to feet?

Multiply the number of yards by 3. For example, 40 yards is 40 × 3 = 120 feet. To reverse it, divide the feet by 3, so 90 feet is 30 yards.

How many yards are in 7 feet?

There are 2.33 yards in 7 feet, found by dividing 7 by 3. In everyday terms that is 2 yards and 1 foot, which is how a tailor or fencing contractor would normally say it.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in 1 square yard, because both sides of the square multiply by 3. So a lawn of 20 square yards is 180 square feet, not 60.
