How many litres are in a quart?

One US quart is 0.946352946 litres, about 0.95 L or 946 ml. It is a quarter of a US gallon, which is exactly 3.785411784 litres.

A US quart is slightly smaller than a litre. That is why a litre bottle holds just over a quart, and why a quick mental rule is to treat the two as nearly equal, then trim about 5 percent.

The quarts to litres formula

US quarts to litres =L = qt × 0.946352946
L:
volume in litres
qt:
volume in US quarts
0.946352946:
litres in one US quart
To go the other way, multiply litres by 1.056688209 to get quarts.
  • Volume

    3 qt

  • Multiply

    3 × 0.946352946

Volume in litres

2.839 L

The full result is 2.839058838 L.

A second check: 5 litres is 5 × 1.056688209 = 5.283 quarts. Since a quart is smaller than a litre, you always get more quarts than litres.

  1. Write the quarts as a decimal.
  2. Multiply by 0.946352946 for litres.
  3. Multiply litres by 1.056688209 to go back to quarts.
  4. Sanity check: litres should be a little below the quart count.

Where quart to litre conversions matter

Engine oil in North America is often sold by the quart, and a car manual might say the sump takes 5.7 quarts. In litres that is 5.7 × 0.946352946 = 5.394 L, so a 5 L can will not be enough.

Paint and car coolant are other places. When you are comparing a job priced in litres, 6 quarts is 5.678 L.

Milk and juice in American stores come in quarts and half gallons. A 1.5 quart bottle holds 1.4195 L, about 1.4 L, which helps when comparing price per litre with imports.

Common mistakes when converting quarts to litres

  • Assuming a quart equals a litre. The difference is 5.4 percent, which is over a quarter of a litre on 5 quarts.
  • Mixing US and imperial quarts. An imperial quart is about 1.1365 L, roughly 20 percent bigger than a US quart.
  • Using the dry quart. US dry quarts, used for produce, are larger than liquid quarts, at about 1.101 L.
  • Rounding the factor to 0.95. On large volumes, such as 100 quarts, that gives 95 L instead of 94.64 L.
