How many cups are in a pint?

There are exactly 2 US cups in 1 US pint. A pint is 16 US fluid ounces and a cup is 8 US fluid ounces, so the ratio is a clean two to one.

In millilitres, a US pint is 473.18 ml and a US cup is 236.59 ml. This is a whole-number conversion, which makes it one of the few kitchen conversions you can do in your head with no rounding at all.

The pints to cups formula

US pints to US cups =cups = pints × 2
cups:
volume in US cups
pints:
volume in US pints
2:
US cups in one US pint (exact)
To go the other way, halve it: pints = cups ÷ 2.
  • Volume

    3.5 pt

  • Multiply

    3.5 × 2

Volume in cups

7 cups

Three pints make 6 cups and the half pint adds 1 more.

Reverse the process when a recipe gives cups and the carton is sold in pints. Six cups of chicken stock is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 pints.

  1. Write the pint amount as a decimal (a quarter pint is 0.25).
  2. Multiply by 2 to get cups.
  3. For cups to pints, divide by 2 instead.
  4. Remember that both units here are the US versions.

Cartons of cream and berries are usually sold by the pint, so this chart helps when you shop for a recipe written in cups.

Real situations: ice cream, berries and milk

A pint of ice cream in the US is about 473 ml. If a milkshake recipe needs 3 cups of ice cream and you have one pint, you only have 2 cups and need another half pint, 1 more cup.

Fruit is often sold by the pint too. A pie recipe that calls for 4 cups of berries needs 2 pints.

Soup is another case. A recipe for 5 pints of soup serves guests from 10 cups of liquid, so scaling to 7 pints means 14 cups.

Common mistakes with pints and cups

  • Mixing US and UK pints. A UK pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, about 568 ml, so a British recipe's pint does not equal 2 US cups.
  • Forgetting that a cup is not a coffee mug. A US cup is a standard measure of 8 fluid ounces, not whatever mug is nearby.
  • Confusing fluid pints with dry pints. Produce such as berries is sold by dry measure, which is a different size from the fluid pint.
  • Dividing instead of multiplying. Pints give a bigger number of cups, so if your answer is smaller, you divided.

Common questions

How many cups are in a pint?

There are exactly 2 US cups in 1 US pint. A pint holds 16 US fluid ounces and a cup holds 8, so doubling the pints gives the cups. This is an exact relationship with no rounding involved.

How do I convert pints to cups?

Multiply the number of pints by 2. For example, 4.5 pints is 4.5 × 2 = 9 cups. To check, remember that each pint is two cups, so the answer should always be exactly double the pint count.

How many pints are in 8 cups?

There are 4 US pints in 8 US cups, found by dividing the cups by 2. That equals 2 quarts or half a US gallon, which is a handy size reference for stock and punch.

Is a UK pint the same as 2 US cups?

No. A UK pint is about 568 ml and 2 US cups is about 473 ml, so the UK pint is larger. The rule of 2 cups per pint applies only to the US pint and the US cup.
