How many MB are in a TB?

One terabyte (TB) is 1,000,000 megabytes (MB) in decimal units. A terabyte is 10 to the power 12 bytes, a megabyte is 10 to the power 6 bytes, and the ratio is a million.

The Calcylator converter works in decimal units, as storage manufacturers do. Binary units use the names tebibyte (TiB) and mebibyte (MiB), where 1 TiB is 1,048,576 MiB. The difference matters for large drives, as the example later shows.

The TB to MB formula

Terabytes to megabytes =MB = TB × 1,000,000
MB:
size in megabytes
TB:
size in terabytes
1,000,000:
megabytes in one terabyte
To go the other way, divide: TB = MB ÷ 1,000,000.
  • Drive capacity

    4.5 TB

  • Multiply

    4.5 × 1,000,000

Capacity in MB

4,500,000 MB

Move the decimal point six places to the right.

To go from MB to TB, a 2,500,000 MB archive is 2,500,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 2.5 TB. Counting six zeros is the main skill here, so write the number with commas and count the groups: a million has two comma groups after the 1.

  1. Write the capacity in TB.
  2. Multiply by 1,000,000, or move the decimal point six places right.
  3. Insert commas every three digits so the size is easy to read.
  4. Check that the result has six more digits than the whole TB number.

Terabytes to megabytes chart

Each row multiplies the TB figure by 1,000,000, using decimal units.

TB to MB
Terabytes (TB)Megabytes (MB)
1 TB1,000,000 MB
2 TB2,000,000 MB
5 TB5,000,000 MB
10 TB10,000,000 MB
25 TB25,000,000 MB
50 TB50,000,000 MB
100 TB100,000,000 MB
250 TB250,000,000 MB
500 TB500,000,000 MB
1,000 TB1,000,000,000 MB

The last row, 1,000 TB, is one petabyte, which is a billion megabytes.

Why a 2 TB drive shows less space

A drive sold as 2 TB holds 2,000,000 MB, or 2 trillion bytes. Some operating systems divide by powers of 1,024 instead, so the same drive appears as about 1.82 TiB. Nothing is missing: 2 × 10^12 bytes divided by 2^40 is roughly 1.819.

This explains the common worry that a new drive is smaller than advertised. The capacity is right; the two sides are using different units, and file-system overhead takes a little more.

Where TB to MB conversions appear

IT teams plan backups in TB but see file transfer logs in MB. A photographer with a 3 TB archive of 25 MB raw files can estimate the count: 3,000,000 ÷ 25 = 120,000 photos. Cloud billing also mixes units, since storage tiers are priced per TB while usage reports may list MB.

Common mistakes when converting TB to MB

  • Multiplying by 1,000 instead of 1,000,000. That gives gigabytes, not megabytes.
  • Using 1,024 twice and calling the answer MB. That result is in MiB.
  • Dividing when you should multiply. A terabyte is bigger, so the MB number must be larger.
  • Miscounting zeros. 5 TB is 5,000,000 MB with six zeros, not 500,000.

Common questions

How many MB are in 1 TB?

One terabyte is 1,000,000 megabytes in decimal units. In binary units, 1 TiB is 1,048,576 MiB, which is about 4.9 percent larger, so figures from software using 1,024 will look different.

How do I convert TB to MB?

Multiply the terabytes by 1,000,000. For example, 3.2 TB is 3.2 × 1,000,000 = 3,200,000 MB. This is the same as moving the decimal point six places to the right and adding zeros where needed.

How many MB is a 2 TB hard drive?

A 2 TB drive holds 2,000,000 MB in decimal units. Computers that count in 1,024s show it as roughly 1.82 TiB, which is why the displayed capacity looks smaller than the label.

How do I convert MB to TB?

Divide the megabytes by 1,000,000. A 750,000 MB backup is 0.75 TB. As a check, six digits drop off the end, so 12,000,000 MB becomes 12 TB in decimal units.
