How many fluid ounces are in a teaspoon?
One US teaspoon is 0.1666666667 US fluid ounces, which is one sixth. So six teaspoons make exactly one US fluid ounce. A US teaspoon is about 4.93 millilitres, and a fluid ounce is about 29.57 millilitres.
Three teaspoons also make one tablespoon, and two tablespoons make one fluid ounce, so the ratio of six comes straight from the way US kitchen measures are built.
The tsp to fl oz formula
- fl oz:
- volume in US fluid ounces
- tsp:

- 6:

4 ÷ 6
Volume in fl oz
0.6667 fl oz
Four teaspoons are two thirds of a fluid ounce, which is roughly 20 ml.
A second worked example: a syrup recipe asks for 2.75 fl oz of honey. Multiply by six to get 16.5 teaspoons, which is 5 tablespoons plus half a teaspoon.
- Write the amount in teaspoons.
- Divide by 6 to get fluid ounces.
- Round to two or three decimals if the result is not a whole number.
- Check against a known value: 6 tsp must be exactly 1 fl oz.
Chart: teaspoons to fluid ounces
The table shows exact values to ten digits. In practice, two or three decimals are plenty.
| Teaspoons | Fluid ounces |
|---|---|
| 1 tsp | 0.1666666667 fl oz |
| 2 tsp | 0.3333333333 fl oz |
| 5 tsp | 0.8333333333 fl oz |
| 10 tsp | 1.666666667 fl oz |
| 25 tsp | 4.166666667 fl oz |
| 50 tsp | 8.333333333 fl oz |
| 100 tsp | 16.66666667 fl oz |
| 250 tsp | 41.66666667 fl oz |
| 500 tsp | 83.33333333 fl oz |
| 1000 tsp | 166.6666667 fl oz |
Multiples of six give whole numbers: 12 tsp is 2 fl oz, 18 tsp is 3 fl oz and 48 tsp is 8 fl oz, a full US cup.
Everyday uses of teaspoons to fluid ounces
Small quantities of strong ingredients are given in teaspoons, but a bottle, shaker or measuring jug may be marked in fluid ounces. If a cocktail needs 3 teaspoons of grenadine, that is exactly half a fluid ounce. A baker adding 15 teaspoons of vanilla across several batches has used 2.5 fl oz in total.
Concentrated cleaning products and garden feeds work the same way. A label may say to add 2 teaspoons per quart of water. Knowing a quart is 32 fl oz tells you the dilution is about 0.33 fl oz in 32 fl oz.
As a sanity check, remember that one teaspoon is only about a sixth of a shot glass. If your answer for a few teaspoons comes out above one fluid ounce, check whether you multiplied by six instead of dividing.
For very small amounts, stay in teaspoons. Converting a quarter teaspoon to ounces gives 0.0417 fl oz, a number nobody can measure at home. The fluid ounce becomes useful once the amount reaches several teaspoons, when you may be pouring into a measuring jug or shaker marked in ounces.
Common mistakes when converting tsp to fl oz
- Dividing by 2 instead of 6. That is the tablespoon factor: a tablespoon is 1/2 fl oz, but a teaspoon is only 1/6 fl oz.
- Multiplying instead of dividing. The fluid ounce is the larger unit, so the ounce figure is smaller than the teaspoon count.
- Rounding 0.1667 too early. Six teaspoons at 0.17 gives 1.02 fl oz, a small error that grows with batch size.
- Using a non-US teaspoon. A metric teaspoon is 5 ml and a US teaspoon is about 4.93 ml, which are close but not identical.
