How to convert percentage to CGPA

To convert a percentage to CGPA, divide the percentage by the conversion factor your institution uses. For many 10-point systems the factor is 9.5, so CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5.

This is simply the reverse of the CGPA to percentage rule. If an institution says percentage = 9.5 × CGPA, then CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5. The reverse is valid only when the institution has stated its rule; otherwise the result is an estimate.

Treat 9.5 as an example. Check the factor on your institution's official notice before using it on a form.
  1. Find your overall percentage from the marksheet.
  2. Confirm the factor or rule your institution uses.
  3. Divide the percentage by the factor.
  4. Round to two decimals and make sure the result does not exceed 10.

Worked example: 68% and 82.5%

Take a student whose final marksheet shows 68% and who must fill a CGPA field on an online application. The college uses the 9.5 rule.

  • Percentage

    68%

  • Conversion factor

    9.5

CGPA

7.16

68 ÷ 9.5 = 7.1579, rounded to 7.16.

Check the result by converting back: 7.16 × 9.5 = 68.02. The small difference from 68 exists only because of rounding to two decimals.

A second student has 82.5%. Dividing gives 82.5 ÷ 9.5 = 8.6842, which rounds to 8.68. The same steps work for any percentage, so the only decision is which factor to use.

A quick sanity check helps catch slips. Under the 9.5 rule, the CGPA is always a little higher than the percentage divided by 10, about 5% higher. For 68%, 6.8 plus 5% is roughly 7.14, close to the exact 7.16. If your answer is far from that, recheck the division.

The reasoning behind the check is that dividing by 9.5 rather than 10 makes the result slightly larger. That is why 76% becomes 8.0 rather than 7.6.

Percentage to CGPA table (50% to 95%)

CGPA values under the 9.5 rule, rounded to 2 decimal places

50%5.2675%7.89
55%5.7980%8.42
60%6.3285%8.95
65%6.8490%9.47
70%7.3795%10.00

Each additional 5 percentage points adds about 0.53 CGPA, because 5 ÷ 9.5 = 0.526. You can interpolate quickly between rows with that rule of thumb.

Use the table to plan as well as convert. If a scholarship asks for 8.0 CGPA and you are at 72%, the table says 72% is about 7.58, so you would need roughly four more percentage points of improvement, from 72% to 76%, to qualify.

The table stops at 95% because 95 ÷ 9.5 = 10.0, the top of the scale. Any rule that produces more than 10 should be capped, or the institution's own conversion should be requested.

When you need to convert percentage to CGPA

Older marksheets and many boards report only a percentage, while online forms increasingly ask for CGPA. Fields in admission portals, scholarship forms and recruitment sheets often accept one or the other, and sometimes they demand both.

Eligibility lines are usually written in CGPA, too. A criterion such as "7.5 CGPA or equivalent" translates into the percentage you need with one multiplication: 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. If your marksheet shows 70.4%, the conversion gives 7.41 and you fall short.

If you have raw marks rather than a percentage, convert them first. A total of 1,312 out of 1,700 is 77.18%, and 77.18 ÷ 9.5 = 8.12. The score percentage calculator on this page handles the marks-to-percentage step.

Applications to universities abroad often use a 4.0 scale or their own grading bands. A CGPA derived with the 9.5 rule does not translate into a 4.0 GPA by simple division, and many institutions prefer an official evaluation or their own conversion chart.

Rounding, the cap at 10 and unusual rules

Round to two decimals, and round the usual way. A percentage of 74.6 divides to 7.8526, which becomes 7.85. Resist the urge to nudge it to 7.9 to look better, since the recipient can check it against the marksheet.

The CGPA cannot exceed 10 on a 10-point scale. If your institution awards more than 95% and the 9.5 rule gives a value above 10, ask for its official figure rather than entering something above the scale.

Not every institution uses a plain divisor. Some publish a formula with an offset, such as CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75, or a lookup table by grade band. Under the offset example, 75% becomes 8.25 and not 7.89, so the same marks can give different numbers.

Grade-band systems add one more twist. Where a transcript lists letter grades with their own point values, the CGPA comes from those grade points and credits, and a percentage is only an approximation. In that case your official CGPA should be read from the transcript, not recomputed from marks.

Mistakes people make

  • Dividing by 10, the intuitive guess, when the institution's rule is different. 68% ÷ 10 gives 6.8, not 7.16.
  • Comparing the converted 10-point value with a 4.0-scale cut-off. The scales are different, and the figures are not interchangeable.
  • Entering more than two decimals or a value above 10.
  • Using the percentage of a single semester when the form asks for the overall result of the programme.
  • Rounding the percentage first and then dividing, which compounds the error.

Finally, keep a record of the conversion. Note the percentage you started from, the factor you used and the date of the notice that gave it. If a verifier asks how you reached 7.16, you can answer in one line.

If you need to go the other way and turn a CGPA into marks, the guide to CGPA to percentage has a chart for values from 6.0 to 10. The GPA guide explains how a US-style 4.0 average differs.

Common questions

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

Divide your percentage by the conversion factor your institution publishes. Under the common 9.5 rule, 68% ÷ 9.5 = 7.16 CGPA. If your institution uses a different formula or a table, apply that rule instead of the common one.

What is 75% in CGPA?

Using the 9.5 rule, 75% ÷ 9.5 = 7.89 CGPA. Under a rule such as percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75 it would be 8.25. Check which rule your institution has published before writing a figure on a form.

Which percentage gives a CGPA of 8?

Under the 9.5 rule, a CGPA of 8.0 needs 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. Multiply the CGPA you want by the factor to find the percentage you need. The same step gives 71.25% for a CGPA of 7.5.

Can CGPA be more than 10?

No. A 10-point CGPA stops at 10. Under the 9.5 rule, 95% already equals 10.0, so a higher percentage should be entered as 10 or converted by the institution. Do not report values such as 10.3.

Should I round my CGPA up?

Report two decimals and round normally, so 7.1579 becomes 7.16. Do not push a figure to the next tenth to clear a cut-off, because recipients can recompute it from your marksheet and a mismatch raises questions.
