How to work out an online shopping discount price

A ₹8,999 item at 15 percent off costs ₹7,649.15. The calculator takes the original price and the discount percentage and returns the final price. It does not include coupons or delivery, so add those separately for the full amount you will pay.

Online listings often display a big discount badge and a crossed-out price. Working out the final price yourself lets you compare two shops fairly.

The online discount formula

Price after discount =final price = price − (price × discount ÷ 100)
price:
listed original price
discount:
percentage off, from 0 to 100
final price:
price after the discount only
This is the formula used by the Online Shopping Discount Price calculator.
  • Listed price

    ₹8,999

  • Discount

    15%

  • Saving

    8,999 × 15 ÷ 100 = ₹1,349.85

Price after discount

₹7,649.15

8,999 − 1,349.85 = 7,649.15.

Adding coupons and delivery to get the real total

Take the discounted price as your starting point. Subtract a flat coupon and add any delivery fee. With a ₹300 coupon and ₹49 delivery, the order above comes to 7,649.15 − 300 + 49 = ₹7,398.15.

Worked checkout
StepAmount
Listed price₹8,999.00
15% discount−₹1,349.85
Price after discount₹7,649.15
Coupon−₹300.00
Delivery+₹49.00
Total to pay₹7,398.15

Comparing two offers

A 20 percent discount on ₹8,999 gives ₹7,199.20, which is ₹449.95 cheaper than the 15 percent offer. If the second shop charges ₹150 more for delivery, the gap shrinks, so always compare the final totals.

Check whether the discount applies to the whole basket or to one item. A percentage taken from a bigger basket can be worth more, but only if you needed everything in it.

A second example: a small order with a bank offer

A set of headphones costs ₹1,299 and a sale gives 25 percent off. The price after the discount is 1,299 − 324.75 = ₹974.25. If delivery adds ₹60, the order total is ₹1,034.25.

Sale prices change quickly online, so take a screenshot of the price and the discount you were shown before paying. It helps if the final amount at checkout does not match your calculation.

When an offer says an extra amount off for paying a particular way, treat it as a flat amount to subtract after the percentage discount, unless the page clearly says it is a further percentage.

Common mistakes with online discounts

  • Forgetting delivery or handling fees that appear only at the last step.
  • Comparing the crossed-out prices instead of the final prices. The crossed-out price may differ by shop.
  • Subtracting a percentage coupon twice, for example from both the listing and the basket.
  • Assuming every coupon stacks with the listed discount. Read the conditions before relying on it.

Common questions

How do I calculate the price after an online discount?

Multiply the listed price by the discount percentage, divide by 100, and subtract the answer from the listed price. For ₹8,999 at 15 percent off, the saving is ₹1,349.85 and the price is ₹7,649.15.

Does the discount calculator include delivery and coupons?

No. It applies only the percentage discount to the original price. Subtract any coupon and add delivery yourself afterwards. For example, ₹7,649.15 less a ₹300 coupon plus ₹49 delivery is ₹7,398.15.

How do I compare two online offers?

Work out the final price of each, including delivery and coupons, then compare the totals. A bigger percentage off is not always cheaper. On ₹8,999, 20 percent off is ₹7,199.20 and 15 percent off is ₹7,649.15.

What is the formula for a percentage discount?

Final price = price − (price × discount ÷ 100). Another way is to multiply the price by the share you still pay, so 15 percent off means multiplying by 0.85. The two methods give the same answer.
