Minutes to seconds:
convert video lengths, laps and timers
Videos, laps and timers are written as mm:ss, so the useful skill is to move between that and plain seconds without losing any.

How many seconds are in a minute?
A minute has 60 seconds. To convert minutes to seconds, multiply by 60. Two minutes is 120 seconds, five minutes is 300 seconds, and ten minutes is 600 seconds.
Seconds are the unit you need when a system will not accept minutes: video editors, countdown timers, stopwatch laps, audio files and programming timeouts all work in seconds.
Video platforms show length as mm:ss, subtitle files use timestamps, and cooking or workout timers count down in seconds. A 59-second clip is shorter than a minute, but a 1:01 clip is 61 seconds, which can matter when a platform sets a 60-second limit.
Most real durations arrive in the form mm:ss, such as 4:35, rather than as a decimal. This guide therefore focuses on mm:ss values, sums with carry-over and the decimal-minute trap.
For larger blocks of time, such as shifts and timesheets, see the hours to minutes article.
Minutes to seconds formula and mm:ss
- minutes:
- Whole or decimal minutes
- mm:ss:
- Minutes and seconds on a clock
- 60:
- Seconds in one minute
- Take the minutes part of mm:ss.
- Multiply it by 60.
- Add the seconds part.
- Check that the seconds part is under 60, otherwise carry it into the minutes.
- 30 seconds = 0.5 minute
- 45 seconds = 0.75 minute
- 20 seconds = 0.33 minute
- 90 seconds = 1.5 minutes
- 1,000 seconds = 16 minutes 40 seconds
To go back, divide seconds by 60. The whole number is the minutes and the remainder is the seconds. For 275 seconds, 275 ÷ 60 = 4 remainder 35, so 4:35.
Worked example: a 4:35 video and a three-track playlist
A video lasts 4 minutes 35 seconds and an upload form asks for the duration in seconds.
Duration
4:35
Minutes
4 × 60 = 240
Seconds
35
Total in seconds
275 s
240 + 35 = 275 seconds. Reversing it, 275 ÷ 60 = 4 remainder 35, which is 4:35 again.
Subtraction works best in seconds too. The gap between 4:35 (275 s) and 7:10 (430 s) is 155 seconds, or 2:35. Doing it on the clock means borrowing 60, which is where most slips happen.
Laps use the same maths. A runner who completes five laps at 1:52 each runs 5 × 112 = 560 seconds, which is 9:20 in clock form.
Now add three songs of 3:45, 4:20 and 2:55 for a playlist. In seconds they are 225, 260 and 175, which total 660 seconds. In clock form, add the seconds first: 45 + 20 + 55 = 120 s, which is 2:00, so the sum is 3 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 11:00.
Minutes to seconds chart
| Minutes | Seconds | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 min | 30 s | A short video clip |
| 1 min | 60 s | One minute |
| 2.5 min | 150 s | A short demo or pitch |
| 5 min | 300 s | A kettle-and-tea break |
| 10 min | 600 s | A short workout round |
| 25 min | 1,500 s | A focus session, as in the Pomodoro method |
| 45 min | 2,700 s | A class period |
| 90 min | 5,400 s | A football match without extra time |
A focus session of 25 minutes plus a 5-minute break is 30 minutes, or 1,800 seconds. Four of those rounds take 7,200 seconds, exactly two hours.
Notice that 90 minutes, the length of a football match, is 5,400 seconds. A single hour is 3,600 seconds and a full day is 86,400.
Films and lectures are best handled in minutes first. A film of 2 h 18 min is 138 minutes, which is 138 × 60 = 8,280 seconds, and a 90-minute lecture is 5,400 seconds.
Phone plans and API metering sometimes bill per second. Assume a rate of ₹0.01 per second, which is ₹0.60 per minute. A call of 7 min 12 s is 432 seconds and costs ₹4.32.
These totals help when a countdown timer or a script asks for a number of seconds and you only know the time in minutes.
Decimal minutes versus mm:ss
A decimal minute is a fraction of 60 seconds. So 2.75 minutes is 2.75 × 60 = 165 seconds, which is 2:45, and 0.1 minute is 6 seconds.
Here is the trap. A duration written 2.30 may be 2 minutes 30 seconds in a clock format, but if it is a decimal then 2.3 minutes is 138 seconds, or 2:18. Always check whether the number comes from a clock or a calculation.
Split times in sport are often recorded as decimals. A split of 1.85 minutes is 1.85 × 60 = 111 seconds, or 1:51. Convert the decimal part on its own: 0.85 × 60 = 51 seconds.
For a quick read of a large number of seconds, subtract 60 repeatedly. 140 seconds is 2:20 and 200 seconds is 3:20. Anything over 600 seconds is more than ten minutes.
A good rule is that a colon means clock time and a decimal point means a fraction. If you see a decimal in a lap time, convert it with the 60 factor before you compare it with another lap.
Timers, code and spreadsheets
Programming languages and APIs usually take seconds. A five-minute timeout is 300 and a 90-minute session is 5,400. Writing the arithmetic as 5 * 60 in code makes the unit obvious to the next reader.
Cooking instructions often give a half minute as a fraction. A '6½ minute' egg is 6.5 × 60 = 390 seconds, and a 12½ minute bake is 750 seconds, which is easy to type into a seconds-only timer.
Spreadsheets store a time as a fraction of a day, so one second is 1/86,400. If a cell holds 0:04:35, multiplying it by 86,400 gives 275 seconds. Format the result as a number, not as a time.
Subtitle files and some video tools write times as hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds, such as 00:04:35,000. One second is 1,000 milliseconds, so 4:35 is 275,000 ms.
Stopwatches add a final trap. A time of 1:05.4 means 1 minute 5.4 seconds, which is 65.4 seconds, not 105.4.
Mistakes with minutes to seconds
- Treating 2.30 as 2 min 30 s. As a decimal it is 138 seconds, not 150.
- Using 100 seconds to the minute. Time is base 60, so 3 minutes is 180 seconds, not 300.
- Adding seconds past 59 without carrying. 3:45 + 4:20 is 8:05, not 7:65.
- Mixing seconds and milliseconds. A value of 275,000 is milliseconds, and 275 is seconds.
- Forgetting to convert both parts when you subtract. Turn each time into seconds first, then convert the difference back.
A reliable habit is to do every calculation in seconds and format the answer as mm:ss only at the end. It removes carrying errors and works for any number of durations.
Common questions
How many seconds are in 5 minutes?
Five minutes is 300 seconds, because 5 × 60 = 300. That is also the figure you would use for a 5-minute countdown or an API timeout. Ten minutes is 600 seconds, and half a minute is 30.
How do I convert mm:ss to seconds?
Multiply the minutes by 60 and add the seconds. So 3:45 is 3 × 60 + 45 = 225 seconds, and 12:47 is 12 × 60 + 47 = 767 seconds.
How do I convert seconds to minutes and seconds?
Divide by 60. The whole number is the minutes and the remainder is the seconds. For 275 seconds, the answer is 4 minutes and 35 seconds, or 4:35. If the remainder is zero, the time is a whole number of minutes.
How many seconds are in 1.5 minutes?
One and a half minutes is 90 seconds, from 1.5 × 60. It is the same as 1 minute 30 seconds, because half a minute is 30 seconds. Written as a clock time, it is 1:30, not 1.30.
How many seconds are in an hour and a day?
An hour has 3,600 seconds (60 × 60), and a day has 86,400 seconds (24 × 3,600). These totals show up in timeouts, cache lifetimes and scheduling settings, where a value of 86400 simply means one day.
