How many feet are in a millimetre?

One millimetre is 0.003280839895 feet, which is about 0.00328 ft. Going the other way, one foot is exactly 304.8 mm. The foot is defined as 0.3048 metres, and a metre holds 1,000 millimetres, so the figure 304.8 is exact and never needs rounding.

Because a millimetre is so small next to a foot, the result is usually a small decimal. That is why most people convert in the opposite direction first and then divide: 304.8 mm to the foot is the number to remember, and everything else follows from it.

The mm to ft formula

Millimetres to feet =feet = mm ÷ 304.8
feet:
length in feet
mm:
length in millimetres
304.8:
millimetres in one foot (exact)
Multiplying by 0.003280839895 gives the same answer. To go back, use mm = feet × 304.8.
  • Ceiling height

    2500 mm

  • Divide

    2500 ÷ 304.8

Height in feet

8.2021 ft

2500 ÷ 304.8 = 8.2021, so the ceiling is a little over 8 ft 2 in.

The steps are the same every time, whatever the length.

  1. Write the length in millimetres.
  2. Divide by 304.8, or multiply by 0.003280839895.
  3. Round to the precision the job needs, usually two or three decimals.
  4. Check the result: every 300 mm is roughly one foot, so 2500 mm should sit just above 8 ft.

Chart: millimetres to feet from 1 mm to 1000 mm

Use this table for quick look-ups. Every value comes from multiplying by 0.003280839895 and is shown to the digits the converter returns.

Since 1000 mm is one metre, the last row also tells you that a metre is about 3.28 feet. Multiples are easy to scale: 2000 mm is 6.56 ft and 3000 mm is 9.84 ft.

Where you convert mm to feet in real life

Millimetres dominate technical drawings, but feet remain the language of the building trade and of many suppliers. A joiner reading a cabinet drawing in mm may need to order a 6 ft board. A cabling contractor given a run of 12,000 mm needs to know how many 10 ft lengths of trunking to buy.

A second worked example: a shelving unit specification says 1981.2 mm tall. Divide by 304.8 and you get exactly 6.5 ft, which is the same unit expressed as 6 ft 6 in. Spotting that tidy answer is a good sign the drawing was first made in feet and later converted to mm.

A useful sanity-check trick is to round 304.8 to 300 in your head. A pipe run of 6000 mm is about 20 ft by that shortcut, and the exact answer of 19.685 ft is close enough to confirm you divided correctly. If the exact result is wildly different from the estimate, you probably slipped a decimal point.

Photographers and furniture buyers meet the same problem. A product page may give a desk width as 1500 mm while a rug is sold in feet. Converting 1500 mm gives 4.9213 ft, so a 5 ft rug is just a few millimetres wider than the desk, which is easy to miss if you only look at the numbers.

Common mistakes when converting millimetres to feet

  • Dividing by 30.48 instead of 304.8. That figure converts centimetres to feet and gives an answer ten times too large.
  • Multiplying by 304.8 when you wanted feet. A length in mm is always a bigger number than the same length in feet, so a bigger answer means you went the wrong way.
  • Reading 8.2 ft as 8 ft 2 in. The decimal part is a fraction of a foot, not inches: 0.2 ft is about 2.4 inches.
  • Rounding too early. Keep the full decimal until the last step, especially on long runs where small errors add up.

Common questions

How many feet is 1 mm?

One millimetre is 0.003280839895 feet, or about 0.00328 ft. It comes from dividing 1 by 304.8, because one foot is exactly 304.8 mm. A thousand millimetres, which is one metre, comes to about 3.28 feet.

How do I convert mm to feet?

Divide the millimetres by 304.8. For example, 5000 mm is 5000 ÷ 304.8 = 16.404 ft. You can also multiply by 0.003280839895 and get the same result. Check by remembering that 300 mm is about one foot.

How many mm are in a foot?

There are exactly 304.8 millimetres in one foot. The foot is defined as 0.3048 metres, and one metre is 1,000 mm. This is an exact value, so you can use 304.8 in any calculation without losing accuracy.

How many feet is 2500 mm?

2500 mm is about 8.2021 feet. You get it by dividing 2500 by 304.8. That is 8 feet and roughly 2.5 inches, a common ceiling height, so it is a handy value to remember when checking room sizes.

How do I convert feet to mm?

Multiply the feet by 304.8. A 6 ft length is 6 × 304.8 = 1828.8 mm. For a quick estimate multiply by 300 and add a little, since 304.8 is slightly more than 300.
