How many KB are in a MB?
One megabyte (MB) is 1,000 kilobytes (KB). Each step up the data ladder from byte to kilobyte to megabyte multiplies by one thousand, so MB to KB needs a single multiplication by 1,000.
The Calcylator converter uses decimal units, where 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes and 1 KB is 1,000 bytes. Binary units are named differently: 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB. Both are explained below so you know which one a given tool is using.
The MB to KB formula
- KB:
- size in kilobytes
- MB:
- size in megabytes
- 1,000:
- kilobytes in one megabyte
Photo size
3.5 MB
Multiply
3.5 × 1,000
Size in KB
3,500 KB
3 MB is 3,000 KB and 0.5 MB is 500 KB, which add up to 3,500 KB.
Going back works the same way. A 24,000 KB video clip is 24,000 ÷ 1,000 = 24 MB. If you only have a rough figure, remember that dropping three zeros turns KB into MB.
- Write the size in MB as a decimal number.
- Multiply by 1,000, or move the decimal point three places right.
- Use the KB figure when a form or setting asks for kilobytes.
- Sanity-check that the KB number has three more digits than the whole MB figure.
Megabytes to kilobytes chart
Every row below is the MB value multiplied by 1,000, using decimal units.
| Megabytes (MB) | Kilobytes (KB) |
|---|---|
| 1 MB | 1,000 KB |
| 2 MB | 2,000 KB |
| 5 MB | 5,000 KB |
| 10 MB | 10,000 KB |
| 25 MB | 25,000 KB |
| 50 MB | 50,000 KB |
| 100 MB | 100,000 KB |
| 250 MB | 250,000 KB |
| 500 MB | 500,000 KB |
| 1,000 MB | 1,000,000 KB |
Notice that 1,000 MB, which is 1 GB, equals 1,000,000 KB. Each extra unit adds another three zeros.
When you convert megabytes to kilobytes
Email and web forms are the usual case. Many sites state an upload limit in MB while their image tools report each picture in KB. If a form allows 2 MB, that is 2,000 KB, so a 1,800 KB photo fits but a 2,300 KB one does not.
Web designers use it when trimming page weight. A hero image of 1.2 MB is 1,200 KB, and compressing it to 300 KB cuts the file to a quarter of its size. A second example: if a 12 MB document is split into five equal parts, each part is 12,000 ÷ 5 = 2,400 KB.
MB versus MiB and 1,024
Some software multiplies by 1,024 instead of 1,000 but still prints MB. The correct binary name is mebibyte, written MiB. For 5 MiB the result is 5 × 1,024 = 5,120 KiB, which is 2.4 percent larger than the 5,000 KB you get from decimal MB.
Common mistakes when converting MB to KB
- Dividing by 1,000 instead of multiplying. Kilobytes are smaller than megabytes, so the KB number is always bigger.
- Using 1,024 and reporting the result as KB without saying it is really KiB.
- Mixing MB with Mb. A lowercase b means bits, so 8 Mb is only 1 MB.
- Moving the decimal point the wrong way. 0.75 MB is 750 KB, not 0.00075 KB.
Common questions
How many KB are in 1 MB?
One megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes in decimal units, which is the standard used by this converter and by storage makers. In binary units, 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB, so software using that system shows a slightly different number.
How do I convert MB to KB?
Multiply the megabytes by 1,000. For example, 7.5 MB is 7.5 × 1,000 = 7,500 KB. A quick way is to move the decimal point three places to the right and add zeros if needed.
How many KB is 5 MB?
5 MB is 5,000 KB using decimal units. If your system counts in 1,024s, 5 MiB equals 5,120 KiB, so check the unit names if the two figures do not match exactly.
How do I convert KB to MB?
Divide the kilobytes by 1,000. A 4,500 KB file is 4.5 MB. If you are comparing against a limit, remember that some systems divide by 1,024 instead and show a slightly smaller figure.
