How many yards are in an inch?

One inch is 1/36 of a yard, which is about 0.0278 yards. A yard is exactly 36 inches (3 feet of 12 inches each), so the conversion factor is exact and you can go either way with one operation.

Inches are small and yards are large, so the yard figure is always much smaller than the inch figure. When you see a measurement of 72 inches, it is only 2 yards.

The inches to yards formula

Inches to yards =yards = inches ÷ 36
yards:
length in yards
inches:
length in inches
36:
inches in one yard (exact)
To go the other way, multiply: inches = yards × 36.
  • Fabric length

    90 inches

  • Divide

    90 ÷ 36

Length in yards

2.5 yd

36 inches go into 90 two times with 18 left over, and 18 is half of 36.

A second example with a less tidy result: a 100-inch length is 100 ÷ 36 = 2.7778 yards, or 2 yards and 28 inches. Many shops sell cloth by the yard, so you may want to round up to the next quarter or half yard when buying.

  1. Write the length in inches.
  2. Divide by 36, or multiply by 0.0277778.
  3. Round to two decimals for buying, or keep more digits for calculations.
  4. Check by multiplying your answer by 36; you should return to the original inches.

Where you convert inches to yards

Sewing and upholstery are the classic cases. A pattern may list pieces in inches while the fabric store cuts by the yard. Standard cloth widths such as 45 inches or 60 inches are inch measurements, and a 45-inch width is 1.25 yards wide.

Trim, ribbon, rope and piping are also sold in yards. If a curtain hem needs 270 inches of tape, that is 270 ÷ 36 = 7.5 yards. Landscapers and decorators use the same step when a plan is drawn in inches but material is priced per yard.

Common mistakes when converting inches to yards

  • Dividing by 12, which gives feet, not yards.
  • Multiplying instead of dividing. The yard is the larger unit, so the number must shrink.
  • Confusing 0.5 yards with 5 inches. Half a yard is 18 inches.
  • Rounding down when buying material. Round up to the next cut length so you do not come up short.
