How many feet are in a mile?

A mile is exactly 5,280 feet, so 1 foot is 0.0001893939394 miles. To change feet into miles, divide by 5,280. Both units are defined exactly in metres: a foot is 0.3048 m and a mile is 1,609.344 m.

Dividing 1,609.344 by 0.3048 gives 5,280, which is why the factor never changes. The tiny decimal is awkward to type, so most people divide by 5,280 instead of multiplying by the decimal.

The feet to miles formula

Feet to miles =miles = feet ÷ 5,280
miles:
distance in miles
feet:
distance in feet
5,280:
feet in one mile (exact)
To go back, multiply: feet = miles × 5,280.
  • Distance

    10,000 feet

  • Divide

    10,000 ÷ 5,280

Distance in miles

1.893939394 mi

About 1.89 miles, or 1 mile and roughly 4,720 feet.

  1. Write the distance in feet.
  2. Divide by 5,280.
  3. Round to the precision you need, usually two decimals for a trail or road.
  4. Sanity check: every 5,280 feet adds one mile, so 10,000 feet should land just under 2 miles.

Where feet to miles is used

Runway lengths are published in feet in many countries, and an 8,000 ft runway is 8,000 ÷ 5,280 = 1.5151515 miles. Drag racing uses a quarter mile, and 1,320 feet is exactly that distance.

Property and road work gives another case. A surveyor may measure a frontage in feet but report a road project in miles, so a 2,640 ft stretch is exactly half a mile.

A second example: a stretch of road

A town plans to resurface 15,000 feet of road. Dividing by 5,280 gives 15,000 ÷ 5,280 = 2.840909 miles, so the job is a little under 2.85 miles. Reporting the length in miles makes it easy to compare with road signs and mileage figures.

The same division works for a trail. A hiker who reads 500 feet on a signpost has 500 ÷ 5,280 = 0.0946969697 miles to go, which is under a tenth of a mile.

Since both units are exact, any rounding you see comes from the number of decimals you keep, not from the conversion itself. Keep at least four decimals for tiny distances so that 0.0947 does not turn into 0.1 by mistake.

Common mistakes when converting feet to miles

  • Multiplying instead of dividing. A mile is the larger unit, so the number of miles is always smaller than the number of feet.
  • Using 5,000 as a shortcut. It overstates the mile count by about 5.6 percent, which is large on a long route.
  • Confusing feet with yards. There are 1,760 yards in a mile but 5,280 feet, so check the unit on the original figure.
  • Reading a tiny decimal such as 0.0189 as 0.189. Count the zeros: 100 feet is 0.0189 miles.

Common questions

How many feet are in a mile?

There are exactly 5,280 feet in a mile. This comes from the mile being defined as 1,609.344 metres and the foot as 0.3048 metres, so the ratio is a whole number and never needs rounding.

How do I convert feet to miles?

Divide the feet by 5,280. For example, 2,640 feet is 2,640 ÷ 5,280 = 0.5 miles. If you remember that 1,320 feet is a quarter mile, you can check most answers in your head.

How many miles is 1,000 feet?

One thousand feet is 0.1893939394 miles, which is about 0.19 miles. You get it by dividing 1,000 by 5,280. It is a little under a fifth of a mile.

How do I convert miles to feet?

Multiply the miles by 5,280. A 3.5 mile walk is 3.5 × 5,280 = 18,480 feet. As a check, each mile adds 5,280 feet, so the answer should be a little over three and a half times that.
