How many calories does swimming laps burn?

At the intensity this calculator assumes, swimming laps burns about 0.14 kcal for every kilogram of body weight per minute. A 70 kg swimmer doing 45 minutes burns about 441 kcal.

The Calcylator swimming laps tool takes two inputs, your weight in kg and the duration in minutes, set with a slider from 5 to 240 minutes in steps of 5, starting at 30. It returns estimated calories in kcal, rounded to a whole number.

Pool swimmers often track sessions in lengths or laps, while the calculator wants minutes. A typical session might be a 10 minute warm-up, 30 minutes of steady laps and a 5 minute cool-down, which together make 45 minutes of swimming to enter.

It is an estimate. Real burn depends on stroke, effort, water temperature, technique and your own body, so use the result for planning rather than as a measurement.

The swimming laps formula

Calories burned swimming laps =calories = 8.0 × 3.5 × weight ÷ 200 × minutes
8.0:
MET value used for swimming laps
3.5:
millilitres of oxygen per kg per minute at 1 MET
weight:
body weight in kg
200:
converts the oxygen figure into kcal
minutes:
time spent swimming
Since 8.0 × 3.5 ÷ 200 = 0.14, the formula is simply 0.14 × weight × minutes.

Estimated calories

403 kcal

The exact product is 403.2 kcal, shown as 403.

MET stands for metabolic equivalent, a way to express how hard an activity is compared with resting. This tool uses one fixed MET of 8.0 for swimming laps, so it does not change with stroke or speed.

The table shows a straight line: double the time and the calories double, and a heavier swimmer burns proportionally more for the same minutes. For a weight between rows, multiply it by 0.14 and by your minutes.

Swimmers who log laps instead of minutes can estimate the time first. If you swim 40 lengths and each takes about 1 minute, that is roughly 40 minutes to enter.

What the estimate does not include

  • Stroke. Freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke are treated the same.
  • Speed and rest breaks. Time standing at the wall counts as swimming time, so enter active minutes only.
  • Water temperature, body composition and technique.
  • The extra food you may feel like eating afterwards, which can easily outweigh the burn.

A second worked example: a 55 kg swimmer who swims for 30 minutes gets 0.14 × 55 × 30 = 231 kcal. The same 55 kg swimmer doing 60 minutes gets 462 kcal. Weight and minutes are the only two levers in this tool, so changing either one changes the answer in a straight line.

Common mistakes when estimating swimming calories

  • Entering weight in pounds. The input is in kilograms.
  • Counting the whole pool visit, including changing and chatting, as swimming time.
  • Comparing the result with another calculator that uses a different MET value and expecting a match.
  • Treating the figure as exact or as a reason to eat more.
  • Forgetting that the result is for 8.0 MET only, a steady lap-swimming effort.

These are estimates, not medical advice. Ask a doctor before starting a new exercise plan if you have a health condition.

Common questions

How many calories does swimming burn in 30 minutes?

At this calculator's fixed intensity, a 70 kg person burns about 294 kcal in 30 minutes, since 0.14 × 70 × 30 = 294. A 60 kg swimmer burns about 252 kcal. These are estimates and vary between people.

What MET value does the swimming calculator use?

It uses a MET of 8.0 for swimming laps. The formula is 8.0 × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes. Because the MET is fixed, changing stroke or speed does not change the result, only weight and minutes do.

How do I calculate calories burned swimming?

Multiply 0.14 by your weight in kilograms and by the minutes you swim. For example, an 80 kg swimmer doing 60 minutes burns 0.14 × 80 × 60 = 672 kcal. The calculator does this for you from weight and duration.

Why does a heavier person burn more swimming?

Moving a larger body through water takes more energy, so the formula multiplies by body weight. A 90 kg swimmer burns 378 kcal in 30 minutes against 210 kcal for a 50 kg swimmer, for the same time at the same effort.

Does swimming speed change the calories burned here?

Not in this calculator, because it uses one fixed MET of 8.0 for swimming laps. In real life, faster swimming burns more per minute. Treat the result as a middle estimate for steady lap swimming, not a precise measurement.
