How many calories does cycling burn?

At moderate effort, cycling burns about 0.14 calories per kilogram of body weight for every minute. A 72 kg rider pedalling for 45 minutes uses roughly 454 kcal. The estimate scales directly with weight and time, so doubling the ride doubles the number.

The cycling moderate calorie burn calculator on this site is based on a MET value of 8.0. A MET compares the energy of an activity with resting energy use, so 8 MET is eight times resting. The calculator asks only for weight and duration, which keeps it simple but means it does not know your speed, hills or wind.

The cycling calories formula, with worked examples

Calories burned cycling (moderate) =Calories ≈ 8.0 × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200 × minutes
8.0:
MET value for moderate cycling
3.5:
oxygen use at rest in ml per kg per minute
kg:
body weight in kilograms
minutes:
time spent riding
8.0 × 3.5 ÷ 200 simplifies to 0.14, so calories = 0.14 × kg × minutes.
  • Weight

    72 kg

  • Duration

  • Calculation

    8.0 × 3.5 × 72 ÷ 200 × 45

Estimated calories

454 kcal

The exact result is 453.6, rounded to 454.

A second case: a 60 kg rider on a 90-minute weekend ride burns 8.0 × 3.5 × 60 ÷ 200 × 90 = 756 kcal. The same ride for a 90 kg rider gives 1,134 kcal, because heavier bodies spend more energy to move.

Commuters, charity-ride trainees and weekend club riders all ask the same question: is this ride worth a snack? Use the chart to set a rough budget before you leave. A 45-minute ride at moderate effort for a 70 kg rider is about 441 kcal, while a 90-minute ride is 882 kcal, so the longer ride is the one to plan food for.

To use the chart for a ride length that is not listed, add columns. A 60 kg rider on a 75-minute ride is 504 + 126 = 630 kcal, since 15 minutes at 60 kg is 126 kcal.

Why your real calories burned cycling will differ

A fixed MET value cannot see how hard you actually ride. A gentle commute on flat roads burns less than 8 MET, and a hilly group ride or a hard interval session burns more. Riding into a headwind, stopping at traffic lights and coasting downhill also change the real figure.

If you ride with a heart rate monitor or power meter, those readings track effort directly and will usually describe your own ride better than a fixed 8.0 MET. The calculator is best used for planning and for comparing similar rides week to week.

Fitness matters too: two riders of the same weight can burn different amounts for the same ride. Use the result to compare rides and plan fuelling roughly, not to count calories to the last digit. Results are estimates, not medical or dietary advice.

Common mistakes when estimating cycling calories

  • Entering weight in pounds. The formula needs kilograms, so divide pounds by 2.2046 first.
  • Including café stops or waiting time in the duration. Use only time spent riding.
  • Using the moderate figure for very easy or very hard riding, which sits at a different MET value.
  • Eating back every estimated calorie. The estimate can be well off in either direction.
  • Forgetting to compare like with like: totals for different bodies and rides are not directly comparable.

Common questions

How many calories does cycling burn in 30 minutes?

At moderate effort, a 70 kg rider burns about 294 kcal in 30 minutes. The formula is 8.0 × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200 × minutes, or 0.14 × kg × minutes. A lighter rider burns less and a heavier one more.

How many calories does cycling burn per hour?

A 70 kg rider burns about 588 kcal in an hour at moderate effort. Multiply your weight in kg by 8.4 for a quick figure. Real values vary with speed, terrain and fitness, so treat it as a guide.

How do I calculate calories burned cycling?

Multiply 8.0 by 3.5 by your weight in kilograms, divide by 200, then multiply by minutes ridden. For 72 kg over 45 minutes that gives 453.6, or about 454 kcal. It is a MET-based estimate.

Does cycling burn more calories if I weigh more?

Yes. Energy use scales with body weight in this formula, so a 90 kg rider burns 1,134 kcal in 90 minutes while a 60 kg rider burns 756 kcal. Speed and terrain also raise or lower the total.
